Small child discovers a friendly giant outside his window

6-year-old Tommy made a startling discovery one morning when he woke up to a strange noise outside his window. When he peaked outdoors to see what was going on, he found himself face-to-face with two very large red eyes. Little Tommy was sure he had seen a monster, and ran to his parents bedroom. When they checked the scene, they concluded that the monster was actually an albino moose.

Undecided what to do with the strange animal, Tommy's parents contacted the Department of Natural Resources. The team of men and woman came immediately to investigate the rare occurrence, and together decided that a nearby Zoo would make a great home for the strange looking beast.

The team of Natural Resources workers gently put the moose to sleep and transported it to the nearby Zoo without harm.

"I go see him almost every week!" says Tommy to reporters as they interviewed him on Saturday afternoon. "I think he's happy in his new home."

Workers at the Zoo are delighted to report that the moose is well taken care of and gets along great with his fellow animals. "He's a great new addition to the zoo and we were glad to have him!"

"Friends question Centre High student's death"

A son. A friend. A student. Emmanuel Amoah, a 19-year-old student from Edmonton's Center high school was found dead after being last seen at school September 1st by two other students. Though the cause of death has not been revealed, an autopsy was performed Wednesday morning.

"If any of his friends were getting into fights, he'd be the one who'd say 'Don't do that, chill out,'" says a friend of Emmanuel's', "He'd always make them laugh." According to CBC, the young man was well admired and intelligent. He was said to have just "vanished".

No one wants to lose a friend. To make sure that doesn't happen, we could all try harder in keeping close contact with the ones we care about.

"Montana woman fends off backyard bear attack with zucchini from garden"

What would you do if a 200-pound bear came knocking at your door? Just after midnight on Thursday, a woman from Helena, Montana found herself face-to-face with a large bear trying to make its way into her home. Her weapon of choice - a large piece of zucchini.

The Montana woman was the owner of three dogs, two of which barked but were scared away by the bear. The third, an older and unhealthy dog, stayed by the woman as she encountered the animal. Before she even knew what was happening, the bear was attacking her dog and she found herself kicking the bear as hard as she could, only to have her pants torn by one swipe of the animals over-sized paw. When she ran to the house, the bear turned full attention to her and was pinned in the front door. The woman grabbed a zucchini she had earlier picked from her garden and pelted it at the bears head. Somehow, the bear was startled and fled.

With only minor scratches on her leg and a precautionary tetanus shot, the woman was lucky to have survived. Her dog was lucky, as well, and escaped practically unharmed. As for property damage, only the apple tree that attracted the wild animal was slightly harmed.

So, we can conclude that the moral of the story is; when approached by a bear, if attacked, pelt the largest object in reach and the bear might go away...

"Canadian Mars rover gadget awaits launch"

Could life exist on other planets? A Canadian designed instrument called the APXS (alpha ray X-ray spectrometer) will be one of ten helping NASA's rover in the quest to find the possibility of habitat on the red planet, Mars. They will be launched in mid-September 2011. Weighing just 500 grams, the instrument is about the size of a trade paperback book and hidden in the rover's belly. It uses 20 times less power than that of a 40 watt light bulb.

The APXS is designed to withstand the shaking of the rocket launch, large temperature fluctuations, as well as being tough enough to be on Mars without needing repairs. There is no way to repair i from 50 million kilometers away on Earth.

"The APXS contains a radioactive source that shoots alpha particles at a rock sample. When the particles hit the nuclei of atoms inside the rock, several things can happen", says an article on the CBC website. "The new Mars APXS machine is faster and more versatile than its predecessors." The article says that earlier versions needed all night to to take one measurement, when the new machine only requires a few hours.

If life could exist on other planets, at least now we can hope that this new technology will find it.

Reflection Entry #1 – First Newspapers

Today, newspapers have an obvious difference to historical newspapers. The content is a large difference. Now that technology has evolved greatly, advertisements and issues around the world are a lot different. Where today there are car sales and opportunities to win iPods or flat screen TVs, historical newspapers might have a bakery sale and the latest news on the war.

The article on Publick Occurences argues that the newspaper was "a source of interactive journalism a full three centuries before the Internet." "Indeed it may be argued that this was the very first instance of a news blog in America."
I think this comparison was made because the article says that there was a space on each newspaper for comments that could be shared when the newspaper was passed to family, friends, and neighbours. This is much like a comment wall on a blog or any post on the Internet. Your comment can be posted for every one to see and comment on.

Even though many newspapers today are critical, I believe they still continue to publish in hope that they have steady readers and that somehow their news will be spread, even if it is by word.
